Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, is a modern surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen are performed through small incisions (typically 0.5–1.5 cm) rather than the larger cuts used in traditional open surgery. The key element in laparoscopic surgery is the use of a laparoscope, a long, thin tube with a high-intensity light and a high-resolution camera at the front. The camera transmits images from the inside of the body to a video monitor, allowing the surgeon to see the affected area clearly and perform the surgery with precision.
During a laparoscopic procedure, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the abdomen. A cannula (a small tube) is inserted through one of these incisions to inflate the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. This gas helps to create a working space by lifting the abdominal wall away from the internal organs. The laparoscope is then inserted through another incision, providing a visual guide for the surgeon. Additional small incisions are made to insert specialized surgical instruments needed to perform the operation.
